I have always been fascinated by the WebCam concept. Accustomed to the computer extending our brain and memory, we are now using it to extend our senses as well. More important than just depicting the weather, or time of day, it allows a fleeting glance into the daily rituals in these far off places and how similar they are to our own. In this tour I have tried to include sites that show something of these daily rituals. Please write me with any comments, or if you come across a WebCam you believe belongs.

Denver Post Online: Opinion
One-on-one environment is beneficial By Kevin Swanson August 29 - While the cost of education in the United States has increased and academic performance has fallen, a bright star shines over America's academic landscape: home education. While government schools spend an average of $5,325 per student per year to attain a 50th percentile performance ranking among the states, $1.5 million home-schooled children cost U.S. families only about $400 per student annually, to achieve test scores averaging 25 percent higher at the 75th percentile.
Developing Educational Standards: Overview
All states and schools will have challenging and clear standards of achievement and accountability for all children, and effective strategies for reaching those standards. President's & Secretary's Priorities, January 2000; quoted on the US Department of Education's web site Good teachers have standards in mind when they set their lessons up, where the idea of a "standard" represents a specific idea of what the teacher expects a student to recall, replicate, manipulate, understand, or demonstrate at some point down the road - and of how the teacher will know how close a student has come to meeting that standard. Standards, in other words, are conceptually nothing new - but they did receive a new emphasis over the last decade, through various state initiatives and through the passage of the Goals 2000: Educate America Act. The growth of the Internet has given us the chance to index the sources of information about standards in one place and place that information at anyone's electronic fingertips. We have established this page as a repository for as much information about educational standards and curriculum frameworks from all sources (national, state, local, and other) as can be found on the Internet.

Evolution, Human Origins and
What do we know about human origins and evolution in Africa? Researchers have culled information from many different fields to address this question. This page was established by Professor Jeanne Sept to maintain links to this constantly growing scientific database, and teaching resources for her students.
Evolution, The History of
The basic idea underlying the Principia Cybernetica Project is that evolution leads to the spontaneous emergence of systems of higher and higher complexity or "intelligence": from elementary particles, via atoms, molecules, living cells, multicellular organisms, plants, and animals to human beings, culture and society. This gives us a view of the history of evolution as a kind of progression towards higher complexity (albeit essentially unpredictable, with many side-tracks and dead-ends). Such an encompassing view may allow us to answer the basic questions: "Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going to?" (The last question requires an extrapolation of this development towards the future.)

Finding Homeschool Support on the Internet
There are several ways to find homeschool support on the web. But first for newbies & the curious, what exactly is homeschooling? Homeschooling means to educate your children at home rather then in public or private school. It exists in a myriad of ways: Unschooling or child-led education is when you follow your children's natural interests & curiosities to educate them. School at home is when you purchase the textbooks for all subjects & follow much the same ideology put in practice in traditional school. Another approach that is gaining in popularity called the Classical Approach or Trivium. This approach goes back to the old ways of teaching, concentrating on the basics, classic languages such as Latin & Greek, & higher order thinking skills. The Montessori Method is named after its founder, Maria Montessori. This method is very natural & uses a lot of manipulatives. Unit studies are a way of integrating most, if not all subjects under a single topic of study. For example, if you were studying Ancient Greece, you would cover the history of ancient Greece, the science of the time period, practice writing skills through reports, short stories, etc. based on what you have learned, & you may practice reading by reading the mythology of the times. Many people also use a mixture of the above or sign up with a satellite school which can perform different tasks or help you with different tasks for your homeschool, such as designing a curriculum, having the security of a teacher you can communicate with, writing transcripts, etc

Genie Spelling Tutor - Macromart Software
We have made this program with one purpose in mind. To make it easier for children to become successful spellers, without tears and frustration. With this software your children won't need parental supervision and assistance very much at all. There are very few children who really like doing their spelling homework. The secret to helping students to become successful accomplished spellers is two fold. One, purchase a good software tutorial program and secondly, to use a reward system to encourage self starting without the need for supervision. I use pocket money as an incentive at home for my three boys.

Grimm Brothers Fairy Tales
Looking for a sweet, soothing tale to waft you toward dreamland? Look somewhere else. The stories collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the early 1800s serve up life as generations of central Europeans knew it-capricious and often cruel. The two brothers, patriots determined to preserve Germanic folktales, were only accidental entertainers. Once they saw how the tales bewitched young readers, the Grimms, and editors aplenty after them, started “fixing” things. Tales gradually got softer, sweeter, and primly moral. Yet all the polishing never rubbed away the solid heart of the stories, now read and loved in more than 160 languages.

Home Education Mailing List
What is Home-Ed? The home-ed list is an open forum for discussion of issues related to homeschooling. The topics that you'll find on home-ed include the following: Reasons for homeschooling. How to help a child learn to read. How to help a child learn math. Learning experiences of homeschooling families. Philosophical discussions about learning. Picks and pans of various learning materials. How to design or select a homeschooling curriculum. Interest-initiated learning. Unit studies. Parenting issues. Discussions that seem only tangentially related to homeschooling. Practical discussions about family projects, hobbies, and outings. Social banter. Pure fluff. The folks on home-ed hold diverse views about education, child rearing, politics, religion, and television. The diversity on the home-ed list is one of its major strengths. All viewpoints are welcome on home-ed. When posting, please be aware that others on this list hold beliefs very different from your own. We have a lot to learn from one another. A little tolerance and common courtesy go a long way towards making the home-ed experience pleasant for everyone. The home-ed list is an open forum for discussion of issues related (either directly or tangentially) to homeschooling. Many of the subscribers are students in the school of life and thus consider everything to be grist for the homeschooling mill. Many of the subscribers have been on home-ed for years and have formed friendships with others on the list. For many of us, the home-ed list is our major homeschooling support group. So, yes, we do care about new babies and birthdays and career changes and health updates.

Homeschool Home
Hi! My name is Mrs. Printable. I love the art of teaching. I have a degree in elementary education from Penn State University. I also have two children, and have made raising them my full-time career. My past experience as a teacher comes in handy every day now that I have my own little students right at home! I have always believed that the parents are a child's first and most influential teachers. Whether you consider yourself a homeschooling parent or not, you are teaching your child every day. This site is full of fun pages you can use with your child. I am thrilled to share my teaching material with you. I made the FREE worksheets you will find here with real children in mind. They are not typical skill and drill worksheets. Not all worksheets are created equal. I design my printables to encourage children to complete a task using creative thinking and problem-solving. This allows the child's individuality to shine through, while giving the teacher a glimpse at the way the student thinks. I have also included printable pages for you, the teacher! Print what you need, when you need it! No shopping carts, no credit cards. Just a whole lot of timesaving printables. Go ahead and bookmark now. I'll wait for you.

Homeschool Information Library - Older Homeschoolers - College Admissions
Five to ten years ago, college admissions officers viewed homeschooled applicants as a novelty. I can picture them passing these applications around the office, commenting favorably on some, raising their eyebrows at others. The admissions personnel I interviewed back then said that they thoroughly reviewed all applications from homeschoolers. Many institutions went the extra mile, asking for extra documentation from those who submitted skimpy information. The objective: give the homeschooled applicant a fair hearing. Of course, nothing stays the same. The novelty has worn off. Some colleges now see dozens of homeschooled applicants each year. We should not be surprised; we all know that homeschooling is growing.

Homeschool Resources & Lesson Plans
New Life Community Church is very supportive of homeschooling, and offers many resources to aid in home instruction. Besides an extensive church library complete with many videos and tapes, there are periodic workshops and many guest speakers. There are also weekly homeschool support group meetings during the school year, complete with cooperative activities and classes for some of those tough-to-teach-subjects. The good news for homeschoolers is that with the sheer volume of educational material available on the Internet today it is now possible in theory at least, to meet nearly all your homeschool curriculum needs, saving dollars. The bad news is, that it could takes days (weeks?) to wade through the glut of information to find lesson plans, interactive sites, etc. to develop your curriculum. Here you will find a selection of some choice resources of interest to Christian homeschoolers grouped by subject. Free-for-the-taking (in most cases) lesson plans, software, or on-line activities are included in each category and more will be added later as things develop. Links with lesson plans are colored green . Keep in mind that not all these links are from Christian sources, and the lesson plans will still have to be picked through just a bit, so do keep your "sifters" on. Otherwise have fun. : )

HOMESCHOOLING: Back to the Future?
The victory of homeschooled 13-year-old Rebecca Sealfon in the 1997 National Spelling Bee brought new attention to the growing phenomenon of homeschooling. Dissatisfied with the performance of government-run schools, more and more American families have begun teaching their children at home. Estimates of the number of homeschooled children vary widely; the best estimate is 500,000 to 750,000, but some estimates range up to 1.23 million. All observers agree that the number has grown rapidly over the past 15 years.

NATional cHallenged Homeschoolers Associated Network
Some of these are homeschool professionals willing to help, some are companies having an interest in serving challenged homeschoolers but most are families, just like yourself, homeschooling special needs children.
National Home Education Network
The National Home Education Network welcomes all homeschoolers. We recognize that homeschooling families come from all walks of life, all income levels, all political philosophies, all religions and have a multitude of different homeschooling philosophies. We are a varied group of individuals who met on the internet and decided to build bridges of understanding between homeschoolers in order to exchange ideas and information. We formed in order to expand the general public's image of homeschoolers to what we truly are, an enormously diverse group which cannot be neatly categorized. We formed in order to encourage the distribution of accurate information from a variety of viewpoints, rather than to promote one particular philosophy over another. We respect that what is best for one homeschool family isn't necessarily best for another. We trust that homeschooling families are intelligent enough to investigate homeschooling issues and legislation, indeed, to distinguish what is a homeschooling issue and what isn't, and to make informed decisions based on several sources of information. We understand that homeschooling families are highly motivated to provide the best learning environment for their children, because they know best how their children learn, and they can most easily adapt to provide the optimal environment for each child. We know from experience that homeschoolers have much to share with one another, from teaching tips to newsletter ideas to political networking. This forum is for all homeschoolers who wish to openly and freely exchange information. This forum is for you.

There are three local chapters in southwestern Pennsylvania: BELL Pennsylvania Home Education Network, Southwestern Pennsylvania Home Education Network, and Alle-Kiski Home Education Network. Statement of Philosophy We believe every family has the right to educate their children at home. We believe government should not control home education. We believe in trusting parents to know what is best for their children and in allowing them to freely choose educational alternatives so, we oppose standardization of home education by government regulations, by promotion of any particular teaching method, or by outside evaluation through testing, government approval, or outside evaluators. We believe compulsory attendance laws can only force attendance; they cannot guarantee education. We believe Pennsylvania Home Education Network actions should empower as many people as possible. We believe members should act individually to represent themselves.

Periodic Table of Elements and of Chemistry Programs
Periodic Table of Elements - EniG. Periodic Table of Elements contains the basic data about the element in five languages. It shows visually the change of physical condition with the change of temperature. The language, the speed of temperature change, the exchange of elements or the scrolling of characteristics can be adjusted by configuration file. The calculating module from the programme "EniG. Chemistry Assistant" for fast calculating the mole mass compounds has also been integrated in the Periodic Table. The programme translates texts with chemical symbols or without them, entered in input line, into mathematical terms (it can be seen as ToolTip text) and calculates them. The periodic Table can be incorporated into presentation, the change of temperature automatically started and the programme closed. The colour of background can be adjusted to match the colour of the presentation slide.
Physics Limericks
A total of 190 limericks were received since the contest was announced in the December issue of APS News. Although most entrants sent in one or two limericks, one sent in 22 and a 'team' from Harvard sent a record 37. Schr"dinger's cat, which was the favorite subject, has reason to feel paranoid; reviewers for Phys Rev came in a close second. The longest poem, a finalist, had 13 limerick-form stanzas.

As we have studied together in our own eclectic ways we have added additional topics to our original web page. We hope you enjoy them all. To find out more about our e-mail loop or join click here. Beware, we have been told we get off topic sharing quite a bit! Still, the best of friendships have developed here! <g> blessings, Connie

Public Education is Doomed Part I First of a two-part series by PHS staff. We Crunch the Numbers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A year of elementary public school already costs more than a year of college.
